UNIT 2: THE MISSION COUNCIL & DECISION MAKING
2.1 The Mission Council
The supreme governing body for “structural, doctrinal, and leadership changes” is the Mission Council.
- Composition: It includes ordained clergy and may include lay members.
- Function: It shares responsibility for doctrine, liturgy, and safeguarding. This prevents the Rector from becoming a dictator.
2.2 Unanimous Consent
This is a radical feature of our governance.
“Major decisions… require unanimous consent“.
Most churches operate on majority rule (51%). The AOCM requires unanimity for major changes.
- Theological Reason: This forces us to wait for the Holy Spirit. If we cannot agree, we do not move. It protects the minority from the tyranny of the majority.
- Practical Consequence: Change is slow, deliberate, and prayerful.
